Mom’s Chicken

While I was editor at Taste of Home, we recruited staffers to share their mom’s recipes for a Mother’s Day themed feature. Without consulting each other, these guys all raved out their mom’s famous chicken. Rather than choose one, we leaned into it, and made four moms very proud. First published in the April/May 2018 issue.

Mollie Rogers at Chimney Corners

Mollie’s humor, grace and immediacy make her a dear kitchen confidant, and her very personal collection of recipes is the kind you can snuggle in with and read like a novel. From the July 2010 Traverse, Northern Michigan’s Magazine.

Pride & Preservation

The final page of a magazine is special…I always think of it as your last impression or a kiss goodnight. Here’s a gorgeous moment to pause and prize the beauty of Northern Michigan, and a seamless way to encourage sharing in and protecting the places we love.

We So Corny

Once or twice a year the word nerds working on the flagship magazine at Taste of Home allowed ourselves a little overindulgence in puns. From Taste of Home’s Summer 2017 issue.

Iron Mountain Italian

Come away to the western edge of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, to a faraway land of tremendous pines, abandoned mines and abundant Italian food. First published in Traverse Magazine’s April 2008 issue.

Jim’s Joint

The only thing better than phenomenal barbecue is phenomenal barbecue smoked and served up by the kind human beings at Jim’s Joint in Honor, Michigan.

Grandma Reg’s Stuffed Cabbage

Coworker Lynda Twardowski Wheatley invited her fellow Traverse, Northern Michigan’s Magazine staffers for supper and served kielbasa and her grandmother’s golobki. We couldn’t rest until we got her recipe… First published in the magazine’s In Season column, January 2007.

Citrus

A poem by young James Earl Jones inspired this collection of bright and luscious citrus recipes. I teamed up with photographer Todd Zawistowski to shoot this feature for Traverse, Northern Michigan’s Magazine, February 2008.

Backyard Weenie Roast

Sensational summer sides to pair with the humble hot dog. We pooled our talents and made it a real potluck at photographer Todd Zawistowski’s Mancelona farmhouse. Diane Kolak art directed and that’s my dog Millie begging for a bite. From Traverse, Northern Michigan’s Magazine way back in August 2006.
